Richard Light is a professional artist who lives and works in Kendal, Cumbria. He is a member of the Green Door Studios - an artist’s co-operative based in Kendal. In recent years he has exhibited widely in the North of England and has work in private collections in the UK, Europe, Japan and the United States.
‘My earliest memory of painting is of splashing water on to a Magic Painting Book at the age of about three and watching, spellbound, as the colours appeared...the magic of painting has enthralled me ever since, waiting to see what will emerge next. Nowadays I work in acrylic or oil on board.’
‘I paint people –and whether the painting is a straight portrait or a more complicated figurative scene I am drawn to those moments in life which at first glance may appear to be insignificant but which could turn out to be momentous. So I am interested in peoples’ psychological states: the sublime moment in an ordinary place, the insight that occurs in a place of darkness, and equally the despair that can be felt in the midst of beauty and harmony.’
